The Hanford Site is the largest of three nuclear production sites created during World War II under the Manhattan Project.  It is 586 square miles, about half the size of Rhode Island. While active, nearly two-thirds of all plutonium produced for the United States government's use was manufactured at Hanford. Since 1980, work at Hanford has focused on clean-up.
